With Amit Shah in Guwahati, Assam BJP Locks NDA Path for Assembly Polls

The Assam unit of the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) on Friday confirmed that it will contest the upcoming Assam Assembly elections as part of the National Democratic Alliance (NDA). The decision was taken during a meeting held in Guwahati in the presence of Union Home Minister Amit Shah.

Assam BJP president Dilip Saikia welcomed Shah at the party’s state headquarters, Atal Bihari Vajpayee Bhawan, located in Guwahati’s Basistha area. Shah arrived in the city after concluding his official engagements earlier in the day in Dibrugarh and Dhemaji.

The Assam BJP will contest the upcoming Assembly elections as part of the NDA, party president Dilip Saikia announced after a meeting with Union Home Minister Amit Shah in Guwahati. The decision was taken at the BJP state headquarters, with senior state and central leaders present. Seat-sharing talks are ongoing.

Decision Taken at Guwahati BJP Headquarters

Speaking to reporters after the meeting, Saikia said the presence of the Union Home Minister underscored the party’s preparedness for the forthcoming elections. “The BJP will contest the Assam elections as a part of the NDA,” he stated, adding that alliance coordination remains a priority.

The meeting was held at Atal Bihari Vajpayee Bhawan, which serves as the organisational nerve centre of the party in Assam. From Guwahati, key strategic and organisational decisions for statewide campaigns are typically coordinated.

Senior Leadership Present

Several senior leaders attended the meeting, including Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma and Union Minister Sarbananda Sonowal. Party leaders said discussions focused on alliance strategy, coordination among NDA partners, and preparations for the Assembly polls.

While the BJP leadership reiterated unity within the NDA, no final announcement was made regarding the distribution of seats among alliance partners.

Seat-Sharing Talks Still Underway

Addressing questions on seat sharing, Saikia said deliberations are continuing. “Regarding seat sharing, we are still in discussions, and a decision will be reached soon,” he told reporters.

From a Guwahati perspective, such negotiations are expected to continue through closed-door meetings at the state headquarters, with inputs from both state and central leadership before any formal announcement.

Guwahati’s Central Role in Poll Strategy

As Assam’s political and administrative hub, Guwahati remains the focal point for election planning, alliance coordination, and campaign logistics. The visit by Amit Shah and the high-level meeting signal that major strategic decisions for the Assembly elections will continue to be anchored in the city.

Party sources indicated that further meetings involving NDA partners and organisational teams are likely to be held in Guwahati in the coming weeks.

What Happens Next

The Assam BJP is expected to hold additional rounds of discussions with NDA allies to finalise seat-sharing arrangements. An official announcement on constituency-wise understanding is likely once consensus is reached among alliance partners.
