Ulubari Flyover to Link Noonmati Corridor via Maharaj Prithu Flyover

Ulubari Flyover to Link Noonmati Corridor via Maharaj Prithu Flyover

In a major step to decongest central Guwahati, Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma on January 28 announced plans to connect the Ulubari Flyover with the Noonmati corridor through the Maharaj Prithu Flyover at the Guwahati Club junction.

The proposed linkage, unveiled during a late-evening inspection of the project site, is aimed at easing chronic traffic bottlenecks around Nehru Stadium and improving east–west movement across one of the city’s busiest stretches.

Guwahati’s Ulubari Flyover will be linked to the Noonmati corridor via the Maharaj Prithu Flyover at the Guwahati Club junction, Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma announced on January 28. The move is expected to ease congestion near Nehru Stadium, with the flyover slated to open to light vehicles by late February.

What Was Announced During the Inspection

While reviewing construction progress, the chief minister said the new integration would significantly improve traffic flow in central Guwahati. He also announced an additional arm of the Maharaj Prithu Flyover extending towards Rajgarh, further strengthening intra-city connectivity.

Officials indicated that this design will help redistribute traffic volumes currently converging at Nehru Stadium and Ulubari, two long-standing congestion points.

Project Timeline and Openings

Providing a status update, the chief minister said around 98% of construction will be completed by February 28. After that:

  • The flyover will open to light vehicles by February 28
  • It is expected to become fully operational by March 15, as stated during the inspection

In addition, the Bharalumukh railway overbridge is scheduled to open between February 20 and 22, offering relief on another critical corridor.

Cycle Factory Flyover to Open by Bihu

During the same visit, Sarma confirmed that the Cycle Factory Flyover will be completed and inaugurated by Bihu, marking the end of the current phase of flyover construction across Guwahati.

“With the inauguration of the Cycle Factory Flyover, all ongoing flyover projects in the city will be completed,” the chief minister said.

Why This Matters for Guwahati

For daily commuters, these openings could translate into shorter travel times, fewer choke points, and smoother movement between Ulubari, Rajgarh, Noonmati, and Bharalumukh.

Urban planners note that linking multiple flyovers into a connected network, rather than isolated structures, is critical for long-term traffic management in a fast-growing city like Guwahati.

What Happens Next

With staggered openings planned from late February through mid-March, traffic authorities are expected to roll out phased traffic diversions and advisories as sections become operational. Commuters can expect visible changes on central corridors in the coming weeks.
