SIT Raids Residences Linked to Zubeen Garg’s Death; Clashes Erupt in Guwahati

GUWAHATI, September 25: The Special Investigation Team (SIT) of Assam Police, probing the mysterious death of legendary musician Zubeen Garg, on Thursday raided and sealed multiple residences in Guwahati, including those of Northeast India Festival organiser Shyamkanu Mahanta and Zubeen’s manager Siddharth Sharma. Both individuals are currently absconding, intensifying public curiosity and anger surrounding the case.

Raids at Shyamkanu Mahanta’s Residence

An SIT team visited Mahanta’s residence in Geetanagar, where only two domestic helpers were present. After a seven-hour-long search operation, the property was sealed. Authorities seized several digital devices, including pen drives, a CPU, seven hard disks, and other documents, believed to hold critical evidence.

Raid at Siddharth Sharma’s Apartment

Another SIT team raided Siddharth Sharma’s apartment in Manpara, which was locked. In the presence of a magistrate, the lock was broken, and the apartment was searched before being sealed. Neighbors revealed that Sharma’s mother, brother, and sister, who had been living there since 2019, have not been seen for several days.

Tensions escalated outside the residence when protestors—many of them Zubeen’s fans—clashed with police. Stones were allegedly hurled at security vehicles, prompting a baton charge by police. Several protestors sustained serious injuries, including head injuries, during the confrontation.

Detention of Shekhar Jyoti Goswami

In a related move, another SIT team raided the Jalukbari residence of musician Shekhar Jyoti Goswami, a long-time associate of Zubeen and a member of the yacht trip in Singapore where the singer died. Goswami was detained for questioning.

SIT Investigation Intensifies

The Assam government has constituted a 9-member SIT, led by Special DGP M.P. Gupta, to investigate the circumstances surrounding Zubeen Garg’s death in Singapore on September 19. Official reports suggest drowning, but the unfolding events and the high-profile raids have fueled speculation and unrest across Assam.

The raids mark a turning point in the probe, as fans across Guwahati continue to demand transparency and justice for the “King of Millions of Hearts.”
