Guwahati, Sept 28 (Maha Shashti):
Among the many creative pandals across Guwahati this year, the Santipur Sluicegate Sarbajanin Durga Puja Committee has drawn attention with a grand Mahabharata-themed pandal, blending mythology with intricate artistry.
The Theme: Mahabharata
Standing nearly 50 feet tall, the pandal immerses visitors in the world of the great Indian epic, complete with intricate carvings, symbolic designs, and mythological motifs. Organisers say the idea was to create an experience where devotees not only seek Maa Durga’s blessings but also reconnect with India’s rich cultural heritage.
The Idol
At the heart of the pandal is an 18-foot idol of Goddess Durga, crafted by skilled artisans from Jalpaiguri. The idol is set against a backdrop that reflects the battlefield essence of the Mahabharata while retaining the sanctity of traditional Durga Puja.
27 Years of Celebration
The Santipur Sluicegate Committee, now in its 27th year, has a reputation for innovative themes. Last year, it showcased a “World Globe” theme, symbolizing unity and global harmony. This year’s mythological concept has already become a talking point in the city, with large crowds expected over the next few days.
More Than Just a Pandal
Organisers have ensured the Mahabharata theme runs through not only the pandal design but also the lighting, stage performances, and cultural activities planned during the festival week. Visitors can expect evenings filled with devotional songs, drama, and folk performances tied to the epic’s narratives.
