Prime Minister Narendra Modi could make a rare national highway landing during his next visit to Assam, tentatively scheduled for February 14, Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma said on Thursday.
The proposed visit is expected to be Guwahati-centric, with major infrastructure inaugurations and foundation-laying events planned in and around the city, alongside a possible demonstration landing at a specially developed highway strip in Upper Assam.
Assam CM Himanta Biswa Sarma said PM Narendra Modi may visit Assam on February 14, with Guwahati as a key stop to inaugurate the Guwahati–North Guwahati bridge and lay the foundation stone of IIM Guwahati. The CM also said a request has been made for a possible landing on a national highway at Moran.
What the CM Announced
Speaking during a Facebook Live on January 22, the Chief Minister said the Prime Minister’s itinerary, if finalised, would include multiple high-profile infrastructure events.
“There is a possibility that Prime Minister Narendra Modi will visit Guwahati on February 14. If he does, he will inaugurate the bridge connecting Guwahati and North Guwahati and lay the foundation stone of the Indian Institute of Management in Guwahati,” Sarma said.
Guwahati at the Centre of the Visit
If the visit goes ahead, Guwahati will host:
- Inauguration of the Guwahati–North Guwahati bridge, a key Brahmaputra crossing aimed at easing congestion and improving regional connectivity
- Foundation stone laying of IIM Guwahati, strengthening the city’s role as an education and knowledge hub
These projects are expected to have direct implications for urban mobility, economic activity, and higher education in the Guwahati metropolitan area.
National Highway Landing at Moran
A notable aspect under discussion is a possible aircraft landing on a National Highway Emergency Landing Facility at Moran in Upper Assam.
The facility is located on a 3.5-km stretch of NH-37 along the Moran town bypass, part of the Numaligarh–Dibrugarh four-lane highway project, about 40 km from Dibrugarh.
Officials said the stretch has been designed to:
- Allow emergency landings of military aircraft
- Support disaster response operations
- Serve as an advanced logistics and security asset
Sarma said the state has requested the Prime Minister to consider landing there during the visit. No official confirmation has been issued so far.
Why This Matters for Guwahati
- Infrastructure push: The bridge and IIM projects directly impact Guwahati’s growth trajectory
- National spotlight: A high-profile visit places the city at the centre of Assam’s development narrative
- Connectivity & security: The highway landing facility underscores Assam’s strategic infrastructure upgrades
What Happens Next
- Final confirmation of the PM’s Assam itinerary is awaited
- Security and logistical preparations will follow once dates are confirmed
- Project inaugurations and foundation events will be officially notified
