Phaagun Jyoti Wins Double Crown at All Assam Junior Tennis Meet

Phaagun Jyoti emerged as the standout performer at the 35th All Assam Junior Ranking Tennis Championship, clinching a double crown by winning the girls’ under-12 and under-14 singles titles.

The championship, organised by the North East Tennis Foundation, concluded on Wednesday, January 28, at the All Assam Tennis Association (AATA) complex in Chachal, Guwahati, reinforcing the city’s role as a hub for junior tennis in Assam.

Phaagun Jyoti clinched the girls’ under-12 and under-14 singles titles at the 35th All Assam Junior Ranking Tennis Championship, held in Guwahati on January 28. Her second straight double crown also earned her the Player of the Tournament, highlighting Guwahati’s growing prominence in Assam’s junior tennis circuit.

Phaagun’s Dominant Run

Phaagun’s double title marked her second consecutive sweep across age categories, following a similar achievement at the India Club championships last week. Officials named her Player of the Tournament, citing consistency and composure across matches.

In the girls’ under-12 singles final, she defeated Dhaniska Mahanta 6-4, 6-3 to lift the Late Bhanu Saikia Memorial Trophy. She then secured the girls’ under-14 singles Late Anjali Mohan Memorial Trophy after Dhaniska Mahanta gave a walkover in the final.

Other Winners Across Categories

The week-long championship at Chachal showcased Assam’s depth in junior tennis, with close contests across age groups:

  • Boys’ U-12 singles: Dhanus Mahanta defeated Sansraj Dutta 7-5, 7-5 to win the Late Haren Chandra Kalita Memorial Trophy.
  • Boys’ U-14 singles: Ayaan Rahman beat Yashaswin Borah 6-4, 6-1 for the Late Rajesh Dohutia Memorial Trophy.
  • Girls’ U-18 singles: Navanita Dutta overcame Priyanka Priyadarshini 7-5, 6-2 to claim the Late Donsaindi Thaosen Memorial Trophy.
  • Boys’ U-18 singles: Chandogya T Pathak won the Late Narayan Das Memorial Trophy with a 6-1, 6-3 victory over Rafel Chauhan.

Why This Matters for Guwahati

Hosting the championship at the AATA complex underscores Guwahati’s central role in Assam’s tennis ecosystem. Regular state-level ranking events give local juniors exposure to competitive play without travelling out of state, helping families manage costs and accelerating athlete development.

Coaches say such tournaments are crucial stepping stones for players aiming for AITA-ranked events and national circuits.

What’s Next

With back-to-back performances, Phaagun Jyoti and other title winners are expected to feature in upcoming state and national ranking tournaments. Organisers indicated that Guwahati will continue to host major junior events through the season.
