Guwahati, Oct 3: A major fire broke out in the early hours of Friday, sending shockwaves through the bustling commercial hub of Fancy Bazar. The incident occurred around 3 AM in the basement of Cyber Mart, a three-storey commercial building located on SS Road, one of the busiest areas in the city.
Preliminary reports suggest that the blaze was triggered by a short-circuit in an electrical board inside the building’s basement, which houses over a dozen shops selling assorted goods.
Tragically, one person lost their life, while four others sustained injuries and were rushed to the Gauhati Medical College and Hospital (GMCH) for treatment.
“The fire spread rapidly due to inflammable materials stored in the basement. Our teams reached the spot immediately, and the fire was brought under control after a long operation,” said an official from the Department of Fire and Emergency Services.
At least 15 fire tenders were pressed into service, battling the flames for nearly seven hours before the situation was brought under control around 10 AM. Several individuals trapped inside the building were rescued by emergency personnel, while others managed to escape through adjoining structures.
The fire also caused extensive damage to property, with several shops completely gutted and nearby buildings partially affected by smoke and heat.
Police and fire officials have cordoned off the area, and a forensic investigation has been initiated to confirm the exact cause of the fire.
