Japan Backs Northeast–Bay of Bengal Connectivity

Japan’s Deputy Foreign Minister Hori Iwao, on February 27, reaffirmed Japan’s full support for connectivity initiatives linking India’s Northeast with the Bay of Bengal and the Indian Ocean. He made the statement while addressing the 6th India-Japan Intellectual Conclave in Shillong, organized by Asian Confluence in collaboration with the Ministry of External Affairs, the Embassy of Japan, the Government of Meghalaya, and the Sasakawa Peace Foundation.

The visiting dignitary said the Northeastern states could become a “powerful engine of growth” if integrated into a broader regional grid connecting Southeast Asia, Bangladesh, and Nepal.

On February 27, Japan’s Deputy Foreign Minister Hori Iwao announced that Japan will fully support connectivity projects linking India’s Northeast to the Bay of Bengal and the Indian Ocean. Speaking in Shillong at the 6th India-Japan Intellectual Conclave, he highlighted the region’s strategic role as a gateway to Southeast Asia.

Strategic Importance of the Northeast

Speaking on Day 2 of ‘Kizuna 6: Scaling up Partnerships’ in Shillong, Iwao emphasized the geo-strategic importance of the Northeast as a gateway to Southeast Asia. He stated that integrating the region with neighboring economies would unlock its economic potential.

According to him, the Northeast is part of a broader economic zone comprising Nepal, Bhutan, India, Bangladesh, and Southeast Asia. He underlined that stronger connectivity would help transform the region into a key growth corridor in South and Southeast Asia.

Japan’s Commitment Under New Leadership

Iwao also said that the new government in Tokyo, led by Prime Minister Sanae Takaichi, will prioritize strengthening people-to-people ties between Japan and Northeast India.

He noted that Japan intends to expand private-sector cooperation in areas such as:

  • Economic security
  • Semiconductor development
  • Clean energy initiatives

The focus, he indicated, will be on sustained long-term partnerships that support infrastructure and regional integration.

Voices from Arunachal Pradesh

Tapir Gao, Member of Parliament from Arunachal Pradesh, also addressed the conclave. He called for deeper engagement with Myanmar and highlighted the importance of cultural and educational exchange.

Gao suggested that, alongside learning the Japanese language, Indian youth should understand Japanese values to strengthen bilateral relations.

Why This Matters for Guwahati and Assam

For Assam and Guwahati, Japan’s reaffirmation carries economic and strategic implications. Improved connectivity to the Bay of Bengal and the Indian Ocean could:

  • Enhance trade routes through Northeast India
  • Boost logistics and infrastructure development
  • Strengthen regional economic integration
  • Position Guwahati as a key transit and commercial hub

With Shillong hosting the conclave, the region’s growing relevance in India-Japan diplomacy has become more visible.

What Happens Next?

While no specific project timelines were announced at the event, the commitment signals continued collaboration between India and Japan in connectivity and infrastructure initiatives.

Future developments may include expanded infrastructure projects, investment frameworks, and deeper economic engagement across the Northeast corridor.
