Two prominent schools in Guwahati were briefly thrown into panic on Saraswati Puja day, just ahead of Republic Day, after receiving hoax bomb threat emails, prompting swift police action.
The threatening emails were sent to Delhi Public School (DPS), Ahomgaon, and Sanskriti The Gurukul School, both under the jurisdiction of Garchuk Police Station, claiming that explosive devices had been planted inside the school premises. Following the alerts, school authorities immediately informed the police.
Multiple police teams rushed to both campuses along with the Bomb Disposal Squad (BDS) and carried out extensive search operations across classrooms, corridors and surrounding areas. After thorough checks, officials confirmed that no explosives or suspicious objects were found, and the threats were declared fake.
Speaking to the media, Deputy Commissioner of Police (West) Numal Mahatta said police acted promptly to ensure the safety of students and staff. “All necessary safety protocols were followed. Bomb Disposal Squad teams conducted detailed searches at both schools. The emails have been verified as hoaxes,” he said.
The DCP described the incident as a mischievous attempt to create fear in Guwahati during a religious festival and ahead of Republic Day, and reassured parents and school authorities that there was no threat to public safety.
Preliminary investigation suggests that the emails were sent from an account allegedly linked to an individual named Rupan Kumar Dhar. Police said cyber experts are analysing technical details to trace the origin of the emails, and warned that strict legal action will be taken against those responsible for spreading panic.
