A Social Message Through Festivity
In a first for the city, a Durga Puja committee in Athgaon is preparing a thought-provoking pandal with the theme ‘Nari Nirjaton’ (Oppression of Women). With a budget of ₹16 lakh, the pandal and idol are being crafted by artisans from Kolkata.
Athgaon’s Bina Pani Samitee is showcasing a ‘Nari Nirjaton’ theme in its Durga Puja pandal this year, addressing women’s oppression, gender inequality, and social injustices through art and symbolism.

Portraying Women’s Journey
Organised by the Bina Pani Samitee of S.C. Road, Athgaon, now in its 94th year, the pandal will depict a woman’s journey from childhood to old age, symbolising the challenges faced at every stage of life. Issues like female foeticide, gender inequality, and silent suffering are at the center of this year’s presentation.
A committee spokesperson said, “Visitors will witness something truly different, as the pandal portrays a woman’s struggles and resilience. Such a theme is being presented for the first time in Guwahati.”
Beyond Decoration: Pandals with Purpose
This year, many Durga Puja committees in Guwahati are moving beyond traditional decoration to spotlight urgent social issues. Themes across the city are expected to highlight:
