Guwahati, Oct 14: The Guwahati Police on Tuesday appealed to citizens to avoid holding unauthorised public gatherings in the city to pay tribute to late music legend Zubeen Garg, citing potential traffic disruptions and public inconvenience.
The appeal came after a group of fans organised an impromptu tribute event below the Sixmile flyover on Tuesday evening without official permission. The gathering reportedly caused temporary traffic congestion in the area.
In an official post on X (formerly Twitter), Guwahati Police acknowledged the emotions of fans but urged them to remain mindful of civic order.
“It has come to notice that an event, being organised at Sixmile below the flyover, is taking place without prior permission or information, to pay tribute to the heartthrob of Assam, Zubeen Garg,” the statement read.
“No one needs permission to pay tribute to our dearest Zubeen Garg. However, we must ensure that traffic is not disrupted and that the normal life of people who are also ardent fans of Zubeen Garg remains unaffected,” the police added.
The department further advised that such tributes be organised at designated open venues like Latasil Field, Chandmari Ground, or other authorised spaces, with necessary permissions from local authorities.
“Our tribute to our heartthrob should spread love and harmony, not cause inconvenience to fellow citizens,” Guwahati Police said, concluding the advisory with a message of mutual respect and civic responsibility.
The late singer’s fans have been holding tribute gatherings across the city since his passing on September 19, from candlelight marches to open-air musical performances, highlighting the deep emotional connection Zubeen Garg shared with Assam’s people.
Key Advisory Points:
- Avoid unauthorised gatherings that obstruct traffic or public movement.
- Suggested venues: Latasil, Chandmari, or other open fields (with permission).
- Police appeal for tributes that promote harmony and discipline.
