Guwahati, Sept 29: The stage is set for Guwahati to host four fixtures of the ICC Women’s World Cup 2025, including India’s highly anticipated opening clash against Sri Lanka on September 30.
In a heartfelt gesture, the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) and the Assam Cricket Association (ACA) have announced that the tournament’s opening ceremony at Barsapara Stadium will be dedicated to the late Zubeen Garg, Assam’s musical legend who passed away in Singapore on September 19 at the age of 52.
BCCI secretary Devajit Saikia said,
“There is huge grief and a tragic situation prevailing in Assam following Zubeen’s death. Keeping that in mind, and as a person who deserves the highest respect, the ACA and BCCI will hold a tribute programme during the opening ceremony. This will be our respect and tribute to Zubeen.”
The 40-minute-long opening ceremony will feature performances by Shreya Ghoshal, Papon, Joi Barua, and the Shillong Chamber Choir, each performing in memory of Zubeen Garg and his contributions to music and Assamese culture.
Shreya Ghoshal is also scheduled to perform during the mid-innings break of India’s match against Sri Lanka, turning the evening into both a sporting celebration and a cultural homage.
Saikia added,
“This will possibly be the biggest tribute the cricketing fraternity can offer him.”
Expressing optimism about India’s prospects, he also said,
“Till now, India has not won any ICC Women’s trophy, so this is a big opportunity. I am sure the jinx will be broken this time.”
With cricket fever blending with emotion, Guwahati is poised to witness a historic night, one that celebrates both the spirit of sport and the soul of Assam.
