Guwahati Crime Down 22% in 2025, Traffic Fines Cross ₹50 Crore

The charge-sheet filing rate rose to 68.34 percent in 2025, compared to 42.56 percent in 2024 and 19.13 percent in 2023. Police said this reflects better investigation timelines and supervision.

Conviction rates show an upward trend

Conviction rates in Guwahati have also improved steadily. According to police records:

  • 4% conviction rate in 2021
  • 28.5% conviction rate in 2025

Under the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita, the conviction percentage was reported at 86.08 percent, reflecting faster disposal and stronger case outcomes in applicable matters.

Decline in property crime and vehicle theft

In crime against property, police registered 1,854 cases in 2025, compared to 2,804 cases in 2024 and 3,752 cases in 2023. A total of 2,118 persons were arrested in connection with such offences during the year.

Vehicle theft cases declined to 553 in 2025, down from 1,118 cases in 2024 and 1,032 cases in 2023. Police arrested 239 persons and recovered 267 vehicles, achieving a recovery rate of 48.2 percent.

Mobile phone theft recoveries

Police registered 203 mobile phone theft cases in 2025, leading to 203 arrests. A total of 1,159 mobile phones were recovered, indicating improved tracking and recovery mechanisms, officials said.

Drug seizures and NDPS cases

Under the Narcotic Drugs and Psychotropic Substances Act, police registered 406 cases in 2025 and arrested 555 persons. Seizures during the year included:

  • 11.919 kg of heroin
  • 529.301 kg of ganja
  • 9,865 bottles of psychotropic syrup
  • 34,918 psychotropic tablets

The estimated market value of seized contraband was pegged at ₹28.86 crore, police data showed.

Traffic enforcement and fines

Alongside crime control, traffic enforcement intensified during the year. Traffic fine collections exceeded ₹50 crore in 2025, reflecting stricter enforcement of traffic rules, increased checking drives, and wider use of digital challans.
