Guwahati, Sept 28:
Amidst the festive fervor of Durga Puja, Guwahati’s automobile market is witnessing an unprecedented rush following the nationwide implementation of GST reforms from September 22, which simplified and sharply reduced the tax structure on vehicles.
GST Slab Cuts: A Game Changer
The Centre’s move to restructure GST slabs has removed most passenger vehicles from the earlier 28% GST bracket, pushing them into a new 18% GST band. Only a limited range of luxury vehicles remain in a higher 40% tax slab.
For everyday buyers, the reform translates into a direct price reduction of ₹50,000–₹60,000 per vehicle, depending on the model. This has immediately spurred demand, particularly in the mid-range and family car segments.

Dealer Stocks Vanish in Guwahati
Local auto dealers across Guwahati, particularly in Adabari, Lokhra, Six Mile, and Basistha, report that inventories have dropped sharply within days of the reform. With buyers queuing up to take advantage of the reduced rates, many showrooms are facing waiting lists and pushing fresh bookings into October.
A manager at a popular dealership in Lokhra told Our Guwahati, “We have not seen this kind of rush in recent years. Cars that usually take weeks to move are being booked within hours. Customers are demanding quick delivery, but most models are now out of stock.”
Customer Response
Families planning vehicle purchases during Puja season are calling the timing “perfect.” Many buyers who had delayed decisions due to high costs are now going ahead with bookings. Several customers reported that the GST savings are enough to cover insurance, registration, and even initial fuel expenses.
Industry Ripple Effects
While dealerships celebrate booming sales, the sudden demand spike is straining supply chains. Transporters are working overtime to bring in fresh consignments, while manufacturers are recalibrating dispatch schedules to meet the surge.
Economists point out that such tax cuts not only push up sales but also ripple into ancillary markets like financing, insurance, servicing, and accessories, boosting overall economic activity in the city.
Outlook for Guwahati’s Market
With Durga Puja and Diwali falling close together, industry experts predict that the momentum will last through the festive season. Some dealers, however, warn that customers may have to brace for longer waiting periods for high-demand models.
