Gauhati High Court Approves Judicial Commission to Probe Zubeen Garg’s Death

Guwahati, Oct 4: In a major development in the ongoing investigation into the death of Assam’s beloved cultural icon Zubeen Garg, the Gauhati High Court has approved the state government’s request to form a judicial commission to probe the circumstances surrounding his demise.

Announcing the decision during a Facebook Live address on Friday, Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma said,

“Following our request, the Gauhati High Court has approved the constitution of a judicial commission headed by Justice Soumitra Saikia to probe Garg’s death. The commission will be constituted on Saturday.”

Justice Soumitra Saikia of the Gauhati High Court will head the commission, which is expected to independently review evidence, testimonies, and investigation reports related to the incident in Singapore on September 19, where Garg reportedly drowned during a yacht trip.

The Chief Minister appealed to the public, saying,

“Anyone with information or concerns regarding Zubeen’s passing including his family members, friends, or fans — should meet the commission and share what they know. Every detail matters.”

Meanwhile, Garg’s wife, Garima Saikia Garg, has recorded her statement before the Chief Judicial Magistrate in connection with the FIR filed by the Criminal Investigation Department (CID).

Sarma confirmed that the first autopsy report from Singapore authorities has been received and handed over to Garima Garg, while a second report, prepared by Gauhati Medical College, will be released shortly.

The CID also produced arrested individuals band member Sekhar Jyoti Goswami and co-singer Amritprava Mahanta, before a magistrate in Guwahati, who remanded them to 14 days of CID custody. Earlier, the agency had arrested event organiser Shyamkanu Mahanta and Zubeen’s manager Siddharth Sharma, both now under interrogation.

According to officials, the Special Investigation Team (SIT) under the CID continues to probe the case “with great speed and precision,” while the government has reached out to NRIs who were present on the same yacht in Singapore, urging them to cooperate with the inquiry.
