Fatasil Ambari Residents Allege Years of Civic Neglect in Guwahati

Residents of Basudev Path in Fatasil Ambari have raised serious concerns over long-standing civic neglect, alleging that the locality’s main road has remained unrepaired for nearly four years, along with persistent problems of open drains and poor street lighting.

Locals said the deteriorating infrastructure has made daily movement difficult and created health and safety risks, particularly for children, elderly residents, and two-wheeler users. The issue was highlighted on January 2, with residents seeking urgent intervention from civic authorities.

Residents of Basudev Path in Guwahati’s Fatasil Ambari area have complained that their main road has not been repaired for nearly four years, with open drains and poor street lighting worsening living conditions. Locals say the neglect has led to health risks and accidents, while nearby areas have seen regular development.

Road damage and open drains raise safety concerns

According to residents, the damaged road surface combined with uncovered drains has turned routine movement into a daily challenge. Locals alleged that the drains have become dumping spots and mosquito breeding grounds, increasing the risk of disease.

One resident, speaking on condition of anonymity, said that despite repeated complaints, no visible action has been taken.

“The road here has not been repaired for four years. Nearby areas have developed, but our locality continues to be ignored. The open drains pose a serious health risk,” the resident said.

Poor lighting adds to night-time risks

Residents also flagged inadequate street lighting as a major concern, particularly after dark. A local resident claimed that requests made to Guwahati Utilities and Construction Limited (GUCL) for additional street lights have not received a response.

He cited a recent incident to underline the risk:

“Last week, a man fell from his scooty at night due to poor visibility and injured his hand,” the resident said.

Councillor acknowledges issues

Responding to the complaints, ward councillor Gour Gopal Mandal acknowledged the problems and said steps were being planned to address them.

Mandal stated that pipeline work carried out by the Jal Board had contributed to the deterioration of the road.

“I have personally visited the area and will take up the matter with the Jal Board. The road condition worsened after pipeline work was carried out. As for the drains, we are waiting for funds to be allotted. Once funds are released, the covering work will begin,” he said.

Residents await action

While welcoming the assurance, residents said they remain cautious and hope that the commitments will result in on-ground action. Many pointed out that similar assurances had been given earlier, but the problems persist.

They urged the authorities to prioritise basic civic amenities such as road repairs, drain covering, and adequate lighting, stating that these are essential for safety, hygiene, and quality of life.

What happens next

According to the councillor, the matter will be taken up with the concerned departments, including the Jal Board, and work on the drains will begin once funds are sanctioned. Residents said they will continue to follow up until tangible improvements are visible in the locality.
