Guwahati, Oct 12: As the festive season approaches, Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma has urged residents of the state to buy and burst locally-made firecrackers from Barpeta this Diwali not out of necessity, but to empower local artisans and strengthen Assam’s rural economy.
In a Facebook Live session on Sunday, the Chief Minister called on citizens to support the region’s small-scale firecracker units, saying that the move would help generate employment and sustain traditional craftsmanship.
“I urge the people of Assam to use firecrackers made in Barpeta this Diwali not because we lack alternatives, but because we must help our own people grow. Every local purchase is a contribution to someone’s livelihood,” Sarma said.
Barpeta, long known for its handmade firecracker industry, has seen fluctuating production levels in recent years due to regulatory restrictions and competition from industrial manufacturers. The CM’s appeal is expected to provide a major boost to local producers ahead of the festive rush.
Officials have also indicated that strict safety and environmental guidelines are being followed by registered firecracker makers in Barpeta to ensure compliance with pollution norms.
