CM Himanta Biswa Sarma Inaugurates Panbazar Rail Overbridge and Jayanta Hazarika Flyover in Guwahati

GUWAHATI, September 27: Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma on Saturday inaugurated two key infrastructure projects in the city, the newly constructed railway overbridge at Panbazar and the Jayanta Hazarika Flyover at Panikhaiti. Both projects are expected to ease traffic congestion, improve connectivity, and contribute to Guwahati’s growing modernization drive.

Panbazar Railway Overbridge

The Panbazar overbridge, constructed at a cost of ₹47 crore, was completed in 18 months after construction began in March last year. The new structure replaces the earlier bridge, built in 1965, which had to be dismantled due to its deteriorating condition.

The overbridge is expected to:

  • Ease traffic congestion in the Panbazar–Paltanbazar corridor.
  • Facilitate the smooth movement of electric trains.
  • Support the ongoing modernisation of Guwahati Railway Station.

Chief Minister Sarma highlighted that the project is a crucial step in reducing the long-standing traffic woes of one of Guwahati’s busiest zones.

Jayanta Hazarika Flyover at Panikhaiti

The Panikhaiti flyover, named after the legendary Assamese singer and composer Jayanta Hazarika, has been built at a cost of ₹69.32 crore. Measuring 530.52 metres long and 7.5 metres wide, the project took nearly 48 months to complete.

The flyover will:

  • Provide smoother travel for commuters between Narengi Tiniali, Panikhaiti, Chandrapur, and Morigaon.
  • Reduce bottlenecks and improve connectivity to fast-growing suburban areas.

Speaking at the inauguration, CM Sarma said, These projects are not just about easing traffic, they are about improving the daily lives of Guwahatians and honoring our cultural icons. The Jayanta Hazarika Flyover stands as a tribute to one of Assam’s greatest voices, while the Panbazar overbridge will be a lifeline for the city’s transport system.

Boost to Guwahati’s Growth

With Guwahati rapidly emerging as the gateway to the Northeast, these new infrastructures are set to benefit both daily commuters and businesses, cutting down delays and strengthening regional connectivity.

Locals and shopkeepers in the surrounding areas welcomed the inauguration, expressing hope that the new facilities would reduce travel time and improve trade activities in the city’s commercial hubs.
