BJP, Assam CM Made a Mockery Over Illegal Immigrants: Jagadish Bhuyan

The Assam Jatiya Parishad (AJP) on Friday launched a sharp attack on the BJP and the Assam government over the issue of illegal immigration, floods, and governance. Addressing a press meet in Guwahati, AJP secretary and senior leader Jagadish Bhuyan said the BJP and Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma had “made a mockery of the people of Assam” by repeatedly raising the issue of deportation without delivering results.

Bhuyan’s remarks came days after Union Home Minister Amit Shah visited Assam. The AJP leader said many people in the state, particularly in Guwahati, had expected concrete announcements addressing daily civic and governance issues, but instead heard what he described as repeated election-time rhetoric.

Assam Jatiya Parishad leader Jagadish Bhuyan accused the BJP and Assam Chief Minister of misleading the public on illegal immigration, floods, and governance. Speaking in Guwahati, he said promises on deportation have been repeated since 2014 without results, calling it a mockery of the people of Assam.

Criticism Focused on Guwahati’s Ground Reality

Referring to the situation in Guwahati, Bhuyan questioned the government’s claims of development. He said that while boats are seen plying on flooded city roads during the monsoon, BJP leaders speak of futuristic projects elsewhere. “People in Guwahati are dealing with waterlogged streets and recurring floods every year. The government must explain what scientific flood-control measures have actually been taken,” he said.

Flooding remains a persistent civic concern in Guwahati, with several localities experiencing waterlogging during heavy rainfall. Bhuyan demanded that the government make public the technical and scientific steps taken to address the issue.

Illegal Immigration Claims Questioned

Challenging the BJP’s long-standing narrative on illegal immigrants, Bhuyan said slogans on deportation have been raised repeatedly since 2014. “Now they say they must return to power in 2026 to deport foreigners. This has become a political slogan rather than a policy,” he remarked.

Citing figures previously shared in the Assam Assembly, Bhuyan said that former minister Atul Bora had stated that 32,670 foreigners were identified. He added that during the current Chief Minister’s tenure, only about 1,400 deportations have taken place. Bhuyan questioned how long it would take to deport a much larger number at the present pace.

Demographic and Language Concerns

Bhuyan also raised concerns over demographic trends, claiming that the Assamese-speaking population has declined to 48 per cent. He said that despite contesting multiple elections, the BJP has repeated the same promises without fulfilling them.

He further criticised what he described as provocative political statements, questioning whether such rhetoric was contributing to social tension. According to Bhuyan, the Chief Minister was elected to govern and maintain harmony, not to create unrest among any community.

Political Context in the City

From a Guwahati perspective, Bhuyan said the city has become a symbol of the gap between political claims and civic reality. As Assam’s largest urban centre and political nerve hub, Guwahati hosts frequent visits by central leaders and high-profile announcements, but residents continue to face unresolved issues like flooding, traffic congestion, and infrastructure stress.

What Happens Next

The AJP said it will continue to raise these issues across Assam, including in Guwahati, ahead of the next Assembly elections. No response had been issued by the BJP or the state government at the time of reporting.
