In a move aimed at strengthening access to higher education among economically vulnerable male students, the Assam Government has invited applications for a new financial assistance scheme titled Mukhya Mantrir Nijut Babu Aasoni.
The announcement was made by the Higher Education Department on Tuesday, January 6, with the scheme set to be implemented from the 2025–26 academic year.
Who is eligible
As per the official guidelines, the scheme is open to:
- Male students enrolled in Undergraduate 1st Year or Postgraduate 1st Year
- Students studying in Government or Provincialised institutions in Assam
- Candidates belonging to families with an annual income below ₹4 lakh
Financial assistance details
Eligible students will receive monthly financial support through Direct Benefit Transfer (DBT):
- UG 1st Year students: ₹1,000 per month for up to 10 months
(Total ₹10,000 per academic year) - PG 1st Year students: ₹2,000 per month for up to 10 months
(Total ₹20,000 per academic year)
The assistance is intended to help students meet basic academic and living expenses and reduce dropout rates at the higher education level.
Balancing gender-based support
In its official order, the Higher Education Department stated that the scheme complements the existing Mukhya Mantrir Nijut Moina Aasoni, which supports girl students in continuing higher secondary and higher education.
The department noted that Nijut Babu Aasoni has been introduced to ensure gender-balanced educational support and to address dropout trends among boys from financially weaker backgrounds.
With this initiative, the state government aims to create a more inclusive higher education ecosystem in Assam, ensuring that financial constraints do not force capable students to discontinue their studies.
