Guwahati, Oct 7: The Assam government on Tuesday launched ‘Orunodoi 3.0’, the latest expansion of its flagship financial support scheme for women, marking one of the state’s most ambitious welfare drives to date.
Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma, who formally launched the scheme, announced that over 38 lakh women beneficiaries across Assam will now receive ₹1,250 per month, with an additional ₹250 earmarked for the purchase of LPG cylinders.
“₹1,250 to over 38 lakh women instantly Assam today expanded its flagship financial support scheme, #Orunodoi3, to become the largest ever anti-poverty scheme in the state,” CM Sarma said in a post on X.
Launched originally in December 2020, the Orunodoi Scheme was designed as a Direct Benefit Transfer (DBT) programme to empower women from low-income households by directly depositing monthly financial assistance into their bank accounts. The initiative started with 17 lakh families, expanded to 26 lakh under Orunodoi 2.0 in 2022, and now reaches nearly 38 lakh families under the third phase.
Sarma further described the initiative as a cornerstone in Assam’s fight against poverty, saying:
“This scheme has helped numerous families escape poverty and live a life of dignity. With Orunodoi 3.0, we’ve created a comprehensive support net that aligns with Antyodaya ensuring no poor is left behind.”
The Chief Minister also hinted at a “special surprise” in February, sparking curiosity among beneficiaries and citizens alike.
