GUWAHATI, September 23: In an emotionally overwhelming moment, Assam bid its final goodbye to its beloved cultural icon Zubeen Garg, as his last rites and rituals were carried out today at Sonapur. Thousands of admirers gathered to witness the legendary singer’s departure, filling the air with chants, tears, and prayers.
Over 75 family members attended the rituals, standing alongside the sea of fans who had come from across the state to pay their homage. The cremation was performed by Zubeen’s sister Pami Borthakur, accompanied by Arun Garg and Rahul Gautam Sarma, marking a deeply poignant moment for the family and admirers alike.
The final rites were conducted by Dhritima Deka, Hiranya, Jayanta Baruah, and Lalit Nath, who ensured the rituals honored Zubeen’s life and legacy. Adding to the gravity of the occasion, the Assam Rifles paid tribute to the singer with a 21-shot gun salute, a rare honor bestowed upon him as a son of the soil.
In a strikingly symbolic gesture, Zubeen was offered the woods of a sandalwood tree he had planted years ago. The moment left many stunned, as if destiny had completed a circle; what Zubeen once nurtured in life was used to sanctify his eternal journey.
Sonapur, the site of the cremation, also holds emotional significance. Locals recalled how Zubeen once rested there while returning from a stage performance; today, it has become the place where he found his final rest.
The day ended with Assam drenched in grief, yet united in celebrating the unparalleled legacy of the man known as the King of Millions of Hearts.
