Amit Shah Inaugurates Guwahati Police HQ, City Surveillance System

Union Home Minister Amit Shah on Monday, December 29, inaugurated the permanent building of the Guwahati Police Commissionerate along with the Integrated Command and Control Centre (ICCC), a city-wide surveillance system in Guwahati. The development was officially reported on January 1.

The inauguration marks a significant upgrade in Guwahati’s policing infrastructure, combining administrative consolidation with advanced digital surveillance aimed at improving law enforcement response and public safety across the city.

Union Home Minister Amit Shah inaugurated the Guwahati Police Commissionerate’s permanent headquarters and the Integrated Command and Control Centre on December 29. The ICCC includes 2,000 CCTV cameras and 60 citizen alert systems. The new facilities aim to strengthen policing coordination and enhance city-wide security in Guwahati.

High-profile attendance and parallel events

The event was attended by Himanta Biswa Sarma, Sarbananda Sonowal, and other senior officials. During the programme, Amit Shah also inaugurated a state-level exhibition on three new criminal laws, organised by the Criminal Investigation Department (CID), Assam, at the newly unveiled commissionerate office.

Officials said the exhibition aims to raise awareness among law enforcement personnel and the public about recent legal reforms.

Guwahati Police Commissionerate: building details

The 10-storey Guwahati Police Commissionerate building has been constructed at a cost of ₹111 crore and is located in the Khanapara area of the city. The new headquarters is designed to centralise police operations under one roof.

Key features of the building include:

  • Seating capacity for 400 police officers
  • Accommodation for all branches of the Guwahati Police
  • A dedicated library and archival section
  • Modern office infrastructure to support coordinated policing

Officials said the consolidation will reduce inter-departmental delays and improve administrative efficiency.

Integrated Command and Control Centre (ICCC)

The Integrated Command and Control Centre, developed at a cost of ₹181 crore, functions as an advanced data-driven command facility. The project has been implemented by Guwahati Smart City Ltd.

Key components of the ICCC include:

  • 2,000 CCTV cameras deployed across Guwahati
  • 60 citizen safety and alerting systems
  • Real-time monitoring and data integration for emergency response

Authorities stated that the ICCC will play a crucial role in traffic management, crime detection, disaster response, and coordinated action during public emergencies.

Why this matters for Guwahati

With rapid urban expansion, Guwahati faces growing challenges related to traffic, crime prevention, and emergency response. The combination of a centralised police headquarters and a technology-driven surveillance system is expected to significantly strengthen the city’s security framework.

What happens next

Officials indicated that the ICCC will be gradually integrated with additional civic services and emergency departments. Further expansion of surveillance coverage and system upgrades are expected as part of Guwahati’s Smart City roadmap.

The new infrastructure is set to become the backbone of modern policing and urban safety management in Assam’s largest city.
