AASU Stages Statewide Protest Demanding Justice for Zubeen Garg

Guwahati, Oct 14: The All Assam Students’ Union (AASU) on Tuesday staged a protest at Dighalipukhuri, Guwahati, demanding justice for late music legend Zubeen Garg, whose sudden death in Singapore on September 19 has left Assam grieving and searching for answers.

Holding placards and banners with messages like “Justice for Zubeen Da” and “We won’t rest until truth prevails,” the protestors, including AASU leaders, students, and supporters, gathered peacefully near the iconic waterbody, marking part of the organisation’s statewide agitation.

“Zubeen Garg was not just a singer — he was an emotion, a symbol of Assamese pride. We demand a transparent, time-bound investigation so that his soul gets justice,” said one of the protest leaders.

Background of the Case

Zubeen Garg passed away in Singapore on September 19, reportedly after drowning during a yacht trip organised in connection with the Northeast India Festival. According to official records, he suffered a seizure while swimming near Saint John’s Island and was later declared dead at Singapore General Hospital. His death certificate listed drowning as the cause of death.

The incident sparked widespread outrage across Assam, with fans and civil society groups raising allegations of negligence and foul play. In response, the Assam government constituted a Special Investigation Team (SIT) under the Criminal Investigation Department (CID) to probe the matter.

So far, several people, including Garg’s manager Siddharth Sharma, event organiser Shyamkanu Mahanta, and a family member, have been arrested in connection with the case.

Assam’s Voice Lives On

Following his passing, Garg was cremated with full state honours at Sonapur, Guwahati, where tens of thousands gathered to pay their last respects. His funeral procession became one of the largest in Assam’s recent history, a testament to how deeply the singer’s music and message touched lives across generations.

Even weeks later, the emotion continues to resonate through the streets, campuses, and hearts of the people of Assam.

“This is not just a protest this is a pledge to ensure justice for the one who gave Assam its voice,” said an AASU representative.
