At least eight people have been arrested across Assam for their alleged involvement in producing and circulating child pornography, the Criminal Investigation Department of Assam Police said on Friday. The accused have been booked under multiple provisions of the Protection of Children from Sexual Offences (POCSO) Act.
Addressing the media, an Additional Superintendent of Police from the CID’s cyber department said the arrests were made following a coordinated, statewide operation targeting online child sexual abuse material. The crackdown covered several districts, including Guwahati, highlighting the scale of the cybercrime network under investigation.
Assam Police’s CID arrested eight people for allegedly producing and circulating child pornography during a coordinated cyber operation across multiple districts, including Guwahati. The accused have been charged under the POCSO Act, and electronic devices used to share child sexual abuse material on social media platforms were seized.
Statewide Cyber Operation
According to CID officials, the operation focused on identifying individuals involved in the creation and dissemination of child sexual abuse content through social media and digital platforms. “We arrested eight individuals during the operation, and all of them have been charged under sections of the POCSO Act,” the cyber department official said.
Mobile phones and other electronic devices allegedly used in committing the offences were recovered during searches. Investigators are examining the seized devices to identify further links and possible additional suspects.
Arrests Across Multiple Districts
The accused arrested so far include individuals from Golaghat, Kamrup (Metropolitan), Kamrup rural areas, Barpeta, Bajali, and Biswanath districts. Police identified those arrested as Dulu Boruah (34), Raju Dutta (30), and Priyam Handique from Golaghat; Hemanta Kalita from Kamrup (Metropolitan); Minhaj Khan from Palasbari in Kamrup; Ashan Ali Ahmed from Baghbor in Barpeta; and Dilowar Hussain from Patacharkuchi in Bajali.
Another accused from Biswanath district has also been arrested, though his identity has not yet been disclosed by the authorities.
Guwahati’s Role in the Investigation
From a Guwahati-centric perspective, the city’s cybercrime units played a key role in coordination and digital analysis, given that Assam’s major cyber policing infrastructure is headquartered here. Officials said intelligence sharing and technical tracking were central to identifying suspects operating across district boundaries.
Authorities reiterated that Guwahati remains a focal point for cybercrime monitoring in Assam, especially in cases involving online exploitation and organised digital networks.
Legal Provisions Invoked
All accused have been booked under relevant sections of the Protection of Children from Sexual Offences Act (POCSO Act), which carries stringent penalties for offences related to child sexual abuse material. Police said further sections may be added as the investigation progresses.
Why This Matters for Assam
The case underscores growing concerns over online child exploitation and the misuse of digital platforms. Law enforcement agencies say sustained vigilance and public reporting are critical to tackling such crimes, especially as internet penetration increases across urban centres like Guwahati and rural districts alike.
What Happens Next
CID officials said forensic analysis of seized devices is ongoing, and more arrests are possible if additional links are established. The accused will be produced before the competent courts as per legal procedure.
