A Monument of Music and Memory
The statue will be sculpted by renowned artist Biren Singha and jointly undertaken by the Morigaon District Administration and the Tiwa Autonomous Council. According to Hazarika, the monument will stand as a symbol of Garg’s enduring influence on Assamese identity, music, and art — a figure whose voice transcended borders and generations.
The memorial will serve as a cultural landmark, expected to attract music lovers, tourists, and admirers from across Assam and beyond.
Remembering a Legend
Zubeen Garg, who passed away on September 19 in Singapore, reportedly drowned during a yacht event connected to the Northeast India Festival. Official reports stated he suffered a seizure while swimming near Saint John’s Island and was declared dead at Singapore General Hospital. His death certificate confirmed drowning as the cause of death.
The incident triggered an outpouring of grief across Assam, with allegations of negligence and foul play prompting the formation of a Special Investigation Team (SIT). Several arrests have since been made, including Garg’s manager, an event organiser, and a family associate.
Assam’s Tribute to Its Musical Son
Garg was cremated with full state honours at Sonapur, Guwahati, where thousands gathered to bid farewell to the “Voice of Assam.” The state government has also announced plans for memorials in Guwahati and Jorhat, ensuring that his spirit continues to inspire future generations.
“This statue will not only commemorate his artistry but also serve as a reminder that Assam’s soul still sings through Zubeen,” a local artist at the event remarked.
