Kamakhya Temple–Pandu New Route Nears Opening Construction Completed at 53 Crore

Guwahati, Oct 20: The long-awaited Kamakhya Temple–Pandu connecting route, one of Guwahati’s most significant infrastructure projects, is finally ready, barring a few finishing touches, and now awaits official inauguration.

The 3.5-kilometre road, constructed at an estimated cost of ₹53 crore, is expected to greatly ease traffic congestion and improve connectivity between the historic Kamakhya Temple, one of India’s oldest Shaktipeeths, and the scenic Pandu riverfront.

“The new route will not only decongest traffic around Maligaon and Adabari but also create a smoother approach to the temple from the western corridor,” said an official familiar with the project’s progress.

Project Timeline & Significance

Proposed in early 2020, the Kamakhya–Pandu road project was envisioned to create an alternative access route for pilgrims and tourists visiting the revered hill shrine. The route also connects key suburban localities, providing a faster corridor for residents and visitors alike.

Construction began soon after the proposal’s approval and continued over a span of five years, with significant improvements made in road design, elevation, and safety measures to withstand hilly terrain and monsoon conditions.

When opened, the new link is expected to cut travel time to Kamakhya Temple by nearly 40%, offering a smoother drive from the Pandu riverside and adjoining areas such as Maligaon, Adabari, and Bharalumukh.

Awaiting Formal Inauguration

While the roadwork has been technically completed, the official inauguration has yet to be scheduled. Sources indicate that the Public Works Department (PWD) is coordinating with the state government to set a formal opening date, likely to coincide with the post-festive period.

Residents and local shop owners in the vicinity have expressed optimism, saying the new route will boost tourism and local commerce, especially during festive and pilgrimage seasons.
