Team India Begins ICC Women’s World Cup 2025 Campaign with Victory in Guwahati

Guwahati, Sept 30: Team India kicked off their ICC Women’s ODI World Cup 2025 campaign with a comprehensive 59-run win (DLS method) over Sri Lanka in the opening match at the Barsapara Stadium in Guwahati on Monday.

Batting first, India put up a strong total of 269/8 in 47 overs, led by solid top-order partnerships and late fireworks in the middle overs. Sri Lanka, chasing a revised target of 271, fell short and were bowled out for 211 in 45.4 overs.

The match, watched by a packed crowd that had gathered hours in advance, marked a perfect start to India’s World Cup journey. The atmosphere at Barsapara was electric, with fans waving flags, chanting “India! India!” and celebrating every wicket with thunderous applause.

Despite brief interruptions due to rain, the Indian bowlers maintained tight control over the game, sealing the win convincingly.

“Winning the opening match in Guwahati in front of such an emotional and passionate crowd means a lot to us,” said the Indian team captain after the victory.

This win not only gives India an early lead in the tournament but also adds to the pride of Guwahati, which hosted the World Cup opener for the first time ever, an evening that beautifully blended cricket, culture, and emotion, with earlier performances paying tribute to Zubeen Garg.
