Guwahati, Sept 30: The Shillong Chamber Choir moved thousands of spectators at the Barsapara Stadium in Guwahati with a soulful musical tribute to Zubeen Garg, during the opening ceremony of the ICC Women’s ODI World Cup 2025.
Known for their angelic harmonies and fusion of Indian and Western styles, the choir delivered a heartfelt performance that celebrated the timeless legacy of the late music icon, whose songs continue to define Assamese identity.
As their voices blended in perfect harmony, visuals of Zubeen Garg’s life and performances played on giant LED screens across the stadium — evoking both nostalgia and tears among the audience. Fans rose to their feet, waving candles and scarves, chanting “Joi Zubeen Da” as the tribute concluded.
“We grew up listening to Zubeen Da. Performing in his memory on such a global stage in his homeland is an honour beyond words,” said a member of the Shillong Chamber Choir after the performance.
The tribute was part of a grand 40-minute opening event that also featured Shreya Ghoshal, Papon, and Joi Barua, all paying homage to Zubeen Garg, transforming the sports ceremony into a moving cultural celebration.
