Guwahati, Sept 30: The opening ceremony of the ICC Women’s ODI World Cup 2025 at the Barsapara Stadium in Guwahati turned into an evening of emotions and melody as acclaimed singer Papon paid a heartfelt musical tribute to the late Zubeen Garg, Assam’s beloved cultural icon.
Performing before a packed stadium of thousands, Papon’s soulful rendition of Zubeen’s evergreen songs moved the audience to tears. As his voice echoed through Barsapara, fans stood with candles and phone flashlights, creating a sea of light, a symbol of love and remembrance for the Humming King who defined generations of Assamese music.
“Zubeen da was not just a singer he was an emotion, a movement that united every Assamese heart. This stage, this crowd, this moment belongs to him,” Papon said during his performance.
The tribute was part of a special segment dedicated to Zubeen Garg during the World Cup’s inaugural ceremony, where Shreya Ghoshal, Joi Barua, and the Shillong Chamber Choir also performed.
The event beautifully blended cricket, culture, and emotion, marking one of the most memorable openings ever witnessed in Assam’s sporting history.
