Guwahati, Sept 26: Tensions flared at Dighalipukhuri on Friday evening after a group of activists and local residents staged a protest near the ongoing GNB Road flyover construction site. The demonstrators alleged that tree trimming in the area and possible design changes would obstruct the view of the historic tank, one of Guwahati’s cultural landmarks.
According to eyewitnesses, workers were seen clearing sections of the area, sparking fears among locals that several trees might have been cut despite earlier assurances to preserve greenery. Protesters carrying placards rushed to the site, demanding transparency and safeguards for the heritage spot.
The demonstration soon drew police intervention, leading to a confrontation. Five protesters were detained and taken to Latasil Police Station, though they were released later the same night.
One of the detained protesters, Mahesh Deka, recounted the incident: “We had only gone there to paste a poster carrying Zubeen da’s words against tree felling at Dighalipukhuri. Instead, we were picked up by the police and detained.”
The incident has reignited debates over balancing Guwahati’s development needs with the preservation of its historic and ecological heritage. Local residents continue to demand clarity from the authorities to ensure that the flyover project does not compromise the iconic view of Dighalipukhuri or further diminish the city’s green cover.
