In the wake of singer Zubeen Garg’s demise, Assam’s Education Minister Ranoj Pegu announced via X (formerly Twitter) that the ongoing half-yearly examinations have been postponed, and all schools in Guwahati will remain closed as a mark of respect.
A State in Mourning
The announcement comes as thousands across the city continue to gather in Kahilipara, Latasil, Ganeshguri, and other localities to pay tribute to the legendary artist. The move reflects the deep cultural impact Zubeen held, extending far beyond music into the very fabric of Assamese society.
Official Statement
In his tweet, Minister Ranoj Pegu wrote: “In mourning of our beloved cultural icon Zubeen Garg, schools in Guwahati will remain closed and half-yearly examinations postponed. This is a small step to honor the immense legacy he leaves behind.”

Youth Pay Their Respects
The decision has been welcomed by students and parents alike, many of whom had already joined tribute gatherings across the city. At Gauhati University and Cotton University, youth-led tributes filled the air with songs like Mayabini, reinforcing that Zubeen’s music remains a guiding light for Assam’s younger generation.
A Pause for Reflection
While the city stands still in grief, the closure of schools ensures that the day is remembered not just for sorrow, but for reflection on the contribution of a man who defined Assam’s cultural soul.
As one parent outside Kahilipara put it: “Our children grew up listening to Zubeen da. It is only right that their classrooms pause for him today.“
