The campus of Gauhati University resonated with grief and melody today as students gathered to pay a heartfelt musical tribute to Assam’s beloved cultural icon, Zubeen Garg.
Hundreds of students assembled in front of the university’s cultural complex, lighting candles and singing the evergreen classic “Mayabini” — a song that has now become the anthem of mourning across the state.
Voices United in Song
With guitars, harmoniums, and dhols, the students recreated the melody in chorus, their voices carrying across the campus. Many were seen holding placards with Zubeen’s photographs, while others sat in silence, visibly moved by the emotion of the moment.
“Zubeen da gave us music that defined our youth. Today, singing Mayabini for him is both our grief and our gratitude,” said Debanjana, a postgraduate student of literature.
The Song That Binds Assam
Following the viral video of Zubeen himself asking fans to remember him with Mayabini, the song has emerged as a symbol of remembrance. Across Guwahati — from Kahilipara and Latasil to Ganeshguri and Chandmari — it has been sung as a prayer, a protest, and a promise to keep his legacy alive.
A Cultural Icon in Campus Memory
For Gauhati University students, Zubeen was not just a celebrity but a mentor figure, often spotted on campus for events and concerts. Today, his absence was felt profoundly, as the tribute became a collective acknowledgment of his influence on Assam’s youth.
As the voices of the students rose in unison, one truth rang clear: Zubeen Garg may have left the stage, but his music will forever remain the chorus of Assam’s heart.
