Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma on January 28 announced clear timelines for the opening of several key flyover projects in Guwahati, outlining when each structure will become operational to ease congestion across the city’s busiest corridors.

The announcements were made during an inspection of the Maharaj Prithu Flyover near the Guwahati Club junction, a critical node linking Ulubari, Rajgarh, and central Guwahati.

Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma on January 28 announced timelines for major Guwahati flyovers. The Maharaj Prithu Flyover will open to light vehicles by February 28 and become fully operational by March 15. The Bharalumukh railway overbridge is set to open between February 20 and 22, while the Cycle Factory Flyover will be inaugurated by Bihu.

Maharaj Prithu Flyover: Opening Schedule

During the site visit, the chief minister said around 98% of construction on the Maharaj Prithu Flyover will be completed by February 28. Following this:

  • The flyover will open to light vehicles after February 28
  • It is expected to become fully operational by March 15

He also announced that an additional arm of the flyover will be extended towards Rajgarh, aimed at improving connectivity and dispersing traffic in central Guwahati.

Bharalumukh Railway Overbridge Update

Providing an update on another long-awaited project, Sarma said the Bharalumukh railway overbridge (ROB) is likely to be opened between February 20 and 22.

The ROB is expected to significantly reduce traffic delays caused by railway crossings and improve movement between western Guwahati and the city core.

Cycle Factory Flyover by Bihu

The chief minister also confirmed that the Cycle Factory Flyover will be completed and inaugurated by Bihu, marking the conclusion of the current phase of flyover construction in Guwahati.

“With the inauguration of the Cycle Factory Flyover, all ongoing flyover projects in the city will be completed,” Sarma said during the inspection.

Why This Matters for Guwahati

These timelines are crucial for daily commuters navigating Ulubari, Rajgarh, Bharalumukh, and adjoining areas zones that experience peak congestion during office hours.

Urban planners note that bringing multiple flyovers online within a short span could help redistribute traffic loads, reduce travel time, and improve road safety across central Guwahati.

What Happens Next

As the opening dates approach, traffic police are expected to issue route advisories and phased diversions. Commuters may see changes in traffic movement from late February onwards as each structure becomes operational.
