Congress leader Mira Borthakur, speaking in Guwahati on Tuesday, launched a sharp attack on Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma, accusing him of avoiding substantive questions and repeatedly diverting public discourse through what she described as baseless political allegations.
Reacting to the Chief Minister’s recent statements targeting Jorhat MP Gaurav Gogoi, Borthakur questioned the credibility of claims linking Gogoi to Pakistan, using sarcasm to underline what she termed the absence of evidence.
Addressing the media in Guwahati, Congress leader Mira Borthakur asked whether Assam CM Himanta Biswa Sarma had “found Rahul Gandhi’s body double yet,” mocking earlier allegations made by the CM. She accused the government of using diversionary tactics to avoid questions on asset growth and governance issues.
Sharp Questions Raised in Guwahati
Borthakur asked whether Union Home Minister Amit Shah was “grazing horses” if such serious allegations against Gogoi were indeed true, suggesting that claims of Pakistan links would warrant central action if backed by evidence.
She also referred to a past allegation by CM Sarma that Rahul Gandhi used a body double during the Bharat Jodo Nyay Yatra in Assam, saying the Chief Minister had failed to provide proof.
“If the Chief Minister made such a claim publicly, has he found the body double yet?” she asked.
Allegations of Narrative Diversion
The Congress leader alleged that discussions on Pakistan or the repeated use of terms like “Miya” surface whenever questions are raised about the rise in assets of Riniki Bhuyan, the Chief Minister’s wife.
“The moment we speak about the increase in Riniki Bhuyan’s properties, Pakistan suddenly becomes the topic,” Borthakur said, addressing reporters in Guwahati.
Corruption and Governance Claims
Borthakur further accused the state government of corruption, alleging that infrastructure projects such as flyovers and government buildings in and around Guwahati were being executed under a “60–40 commission system.”
She claimed the Chief Minister’s remarks were driven by political insecurity and fear of Gogoi’s growing influence.
Clarification on Flag Controversy
Addressing a recent controversy, Borthakur said Gaurav Gogoi could not inaugurate a flag due to an urgent visit to Delhi, rejecting allegations that the MP deliberately skipped the event.
She also questioned the neutrality of the Election Commission, asking how vote-cutting could occur if the system were truly impartial.
“If the Election Commission is neutral, how can Himanta Biswa Sarma openly cut votes?” she asked.
Call for Open Debate
Concluding her remarks in Guwahati, Borthakur challenged the Chief Minister to engage in an open television debate with Gaurav Gogoi instead of making allegations through press statements.
Political observers in Guwahati said the exchange reflects rising political temperatures in the state capital ahead of key political developments.
