Assam State Zoo Footfall Fluctuates; July, December See Peak Rush

Visitor data from the Assam State Zoo cum Botanical Garden shows that footfall has fluctuated significantly over the last two financial years, with July and December emerging as peak months, while most other months record moderate to low attendance.

Figures for the period April to December indicate that the zoo received 4,84,405 visitors in 2024–25, which increased to 5,13,687 visitors in 2025–26. However, officials noted that the increase is unevenly distributed and driven largely by a few high-traffic months rather than consistent year-round growth.

Assam State Zoo cum Botanical Garden in Guwahati recorded uneven visitor footfall over the past two years, with July and December accounting for the highest turnout. While total visitors rose from 4.84 lakh in 2024 – 25 to 5.13 lakh in 2025–26, attendance remained low or moderate during most other months.

July and December dominate annual footfall

In both years, July recorded the highest number of visitors, coinciding with school vacations. Zoo records show:

  • July 2024: 1,11,721 visitors
  • July 2025: 1,24,526 visitors

December also remained a major draw due to the winter holidays and favourable weather conditions. The zoo recorded over 86,000 visitors in December 2024 and nearly 85,000 visitors in December 2025.

Outside these two months, visitor numbers remained significantly lower, suggesting limited regular footfall during non-holiday periods.

Monsoon impact is clearly visible

The effect of the monsoon season is sharply reflected in the data. August 2024 saw the lowest footfall of the two-year period, with only 3,645 visitors recorded.

Although August 2025 showed some recovery with 40,508 visitors, attendance during rainy months continued to lag behind peak seasons. Officials said weather conditions and accessibility issues during heavy rainfall likely deter visitors.

Moderate turnout in other months

Other months showed only marginal variation year-on-year:

  • April: 48,817 visitors in 2024; 60,932 in 2025
  • June: Slight increase, but numbers remained moderate
  • September: Consistently mid-range attendance
  • October–November: Visitor numbers stayed between 43,000 and 49,000 in both years

These figures indicate a stable but unspectacular turnout outside peak holiday months.

Officials cite changing recreation patterns

An official from the Assam State Zoo, speaking to local media, attributed part of the fluctuation to changing leisure preferences in Guwahati.

“Visitor numbers have reduced in some months because many new parks and public spaces have opened. People now have more choices, so they don’t come to one place alone,” the official said.

The expansion of recreational options across the city has diversified visitor movement, affecting traditional attractions like the zoo.

Why this matters

The data highlights the challenge of sustaining consistent visitor engagement at one of Guwahati’s most prominent public attractions. While peak months ensure high turnout, uneven footfall raises questions about long-term planning, visitor experience upgrades, and year-round engagement strategies.

What happens next

Zoo authorities are expected to review visitor trends to explore ways to improve off-season footfall, including thematic programmes, educational initiatives, and better accessibility during monsoon months.
