Assam Govt to Appoint Special Prosecutor in Zubeen Garg Case

The Assam government will appoint a Special Public Prosecutor and move the Guwahati High Court seeking approval for a special court in connection with the Zubeen Garg case, Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma announced on January 1.

Speaking on the first day of the New Year, the Chief Minister expressed condolences over the passing of legendary singer Zubeen Garg, calling it a profound loss to Assam’s culture, society, and people, and assured that the state is committed to ensuring justice in the case.

The Assam government will appoint a Special Public Prosecutor and seek approval from the Guwahati High Court to constitute a special court in the Zubeen Garg case, Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma said on January 1. The move aims to ensure focused, transparent, and speedy proceedings, the Chief Minister added.

Special prosecutor to be appointed on January 12

The Chief Minister said a Special Public Prosecutor will be appointed on January 12, along with three to four criminal advocates to assist in the case. While the name of the prosecutor has not yet been disclosed, it will be announced in the coming days.

He praised the Special Investigation Team (SIT) for what he described as a swift and thorough investigation, noting that a chargesheet has already been filed within a short span of time.

Proposal for a dedicated special court

Dr Sarma stated that the state government will approach the Guwahati High Court to seek permission for constituting a special court exclusively for the case. According to him, the objective is to ensure that the proceedings remain focused, transparent, and time-bound.

He emphasised that the government would act strictly in accordance with the court’s directions and uphold the rule of law throughout the process.

CM’s remarks on cultural loss

Reflecting on the loss, the Chief Minister said that while the year brought several milestones for Assam, it was also marked by a deep cultural setback.

“With diligence, sincerity, and fairness, this case must be resolved, and Zubeen Garg must receive the justice he deserves,” Dr Sarma said.

Why this matters

Zubeen Garg is widely regarded as one of Assam’s most influential cultural icons. Any legal case connected to his life and legacy has drawn widespread public attention, making transparency and judicial clarity a key concern for many in the state.

What happens next

The appointment of the Special Public Prosecutor is scheduled for January 12. Following this, the state government is expected to formally move the Guwahati High Court seeking approval for a special court. Further updates are likely once the prosecutor is named and the court process advances.
